MBTA baggage searches - Know Thy Rights; Speak Out
Yesterday morning at the T station, there was a woman handing out flyers [MSWord format] from the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyer's Guild on the MBTA baggage searches - namely, their opinion that it's unconstitutional, what you can do, and what you can expect to happen if you do not consent to be searched.

Some useful info from the end of the flyer:

"If you disagree with the MBTA’s proposed search policy, contact the MBTA Police (sample letter available on our website, www.nlgmass.org).

Call: (617) 222-1100
E-mail: chiefofpolice@mbta.com
Write: MBTA Police, 240 South Hampton St., Boston, MA 02188

If you are searched or questioned, contact the National Lawyers Guild’s National Police Accountability Project at (617) 227-6015 or npap@nlg.org."

Good to know. Especially that you are required to identify yourself, but not to allow them to search you.

*nod* I was talking to some folks on the bus this morning, and there's apparently ongoing debate over whether "identify yourself" means "tell them who you are" or "produce valid ID". The former is certainly required (a la recent Supreme Court decision); the latter's the question...

That would be my issue, too. Hopefully it will be a moot point, but I'm not holding my breath.
